INTERVIEW with Coma Coast

Last week Coma Coast were Single of the Week on the blog. The electronic duo met in Caracas in 2012 and have released their second EP out of three. Below is my interview where we discussed music, Spanish and their debut album!

l  Your singles “Fail Better” and “Last Song” are both Single of the Week on the blog. What can you tell us about those tracks?

     Both tracks are a natural progression from our first EP. Fail Better has a strong influence from Kraftwerk melodies (think Neon Lights for the dance floor) with a dark Italo-Disco synth. The chorus builds up to include a falsetto in the second part and piano harmonies which we love as we are big fans of rolling piano house tracks.  The lyrics are a tribute to all losers who thrive at trying.

     Last Song tries to capture the angst of being the last person on the dancefloor and knowing that it's light and daytime outside. Knowing that there's nobody home and trying to avoid the day after a great night out... It's a love song to the last person in the club... whether that be the DJ, the bouncer or the cleaner. Very romantic... Musically you can see some Italians Do It Better influences and some up to date 80s beats thanks to Rey's magic wand.

l  This EP is the second in a three-part series. What inspired you to release your EPs this way?
We can't wait to put an album next year but at the moment we're releasing 3 EPs on Parissi La Musique label. Music is consumed very quickly nowadays so you have to win people's hearts first and hope one day they are ready to commit to listening to a whole album.   

l  So far you’ve performed in Paris, Tokyo and London. Where else would you like to perform?
We're very lucky to have been booked to DJ at great parties and festivals. High up on the wish list for the future would be Berghain, Sonar and Airwaves Festival in Iceland. It's safe to say we wouldn't turn down a festival spot in the Med, something like Calvi on the Rocks in Corsica which has to be our favourite place on earth.

l  Which artists would you like to collaborate with in the future?

     Coma Coast is a collaborative project and we can't wait to invite guests to join us in our musical journey. Dream collaborations would be with The 2 Bears, Peaches and Angelo Badalamenti. Ideally all at the same time.

l  You two met in Caracas, Venezuela and have Spanish backgrounds. Would you ever consider recording any tracks in Spanish?

     I've been living in London for the past 12 years so I feel more comfortable singing in English. I always have done since I started making music as for me singing in a different language opened up a new way of expressing myself. One day we'll record a Spanish track, we'll just have to wait for our Latino blood to bubble to the surface.

l  You guys are working on your debut album to be released next year. What if anything, can you tell us about that?

     We have 20 tracks that we have been working on for the past 3 years and they keep evolving now that our sound is taking shape. Ideally we'll lock ourselves in a studio for a few weeks so we can put the finishing touches to them and invite musicians to collaborate. At the moment we are finishing our next EP to be released in the autumn so one step at the time. 

l  Lastly is there anything you’d like to say to your fans and supporters?

INTERVIEW with Eliza Shaddad

Eliza Shaddad is a brand new up and coming artist who has already collaborated with the likes of Clean Bandit and supported Rudimental and Alt-J on tour. Her new EP "Waters" is out now and is well worth a listen. Below is my interview with Eliza Shaddad where we discussed Clean Bandit, covers and charity work.

Your EP “Waters” is out now. What can you tell us about that? 
ʻWatersʼ is composed of four songs which I wrote over the last year, four songs about love and loss and essentially being haunted by both. Itʼs a larger and more complex sound than most people will have heard out of me before, and whilst it has its start point in folk it progresses to an almost rockier sound in places on this EP. I recorded it in a converted barn at the end of a peninsula in Devon which the amazing producer Chris Bond, and it was released on Beatnik Creative Records
on the 16th of June.


The EP has received critical acclaim and promotion from iTunes. How did that feel? 
Itʼs been wonderful seeing some of the reactions to the music. Having kept the songs to myself for a long time it feels great to have them out in the world finally, and for the feedback to be good, and for platforms as large as iTunes to be promoting it...thatʼs the icing on the cake.


Recently you featured on Clean Banditʼs debut album “New Eyes”. How did you cross paths and what was it like working with them? 
I was busking a couple of years ago in Shoreditch and caught the ear of Jack Patterson who was cycling past. He came back and said hi, and the rest is history:) Right place right time basically; and itʼs been pretty mad being involved with them - writing Birch together (which appears on the album ʻNew Eyesʼ was an absolute pleasure, and filming the video for UK Shanty with Lily Cole was pretty crazy. Theyʼre hard working and a lot of fun to gig with:)


You also founded an organization called “Girls Girls Girls”. What can you tell us about that? 
My friend and fellow musician Samantha Lindo actually founded Girls Girls Girls after watching Beyonce and her killer all-female band at Glastonbury. I became involved shortly after, and we decided to create a little collective of female artists and work together to put on events to promote women within the creative industries, and to raise awareness, money and to stand in solidarity with females around the world who have been affected by Female Genital Cutting.  We work with London-based charity, Orchid Project, and we all come together at special arts nights to empower
each other as performers and support this important cause.


You recently did a darker acoustic cover of Kieszaʼs track “Hideaway”. What other tracks would you like to cover in the future? 
There are thousands of songs Iʼd love to cover, from Dolly Parton to Bob Dylan to Radiohead. My label-mate Turtle (Jon Cooper) and I are currently working on a series of three covers, of which Kieszaʼs ʻHideawayʼ is the first. I shanʼt ruin the surprise of the two that are coming - keep your eyes and ears open:)


Previously youʼve supported the likes of Rudimental and Alt-J on their tours. Who would 
you like to support you on your tours in the future? 
It was with Clean Bandit that I supported Rudimental and Alt-J, and both were incredible experiences. Alt-J in particular as it was at Shepherdʼs Bush Empire; one of my favourite London venues. In future, with my band Iʼd love to support artists such as The National, Daughter, Ben Howard.


What can we expect in the future from Eliza Shaddad?
More music, more gigs, a tour coming up at the end of the summer, and some more exciting collaborations along the way.

INTERVIEW with Dr Meaker

Bristol-based group Dr Meaker are currently Single of the Week on the blog with their single "Right Back" which features vocals from Sian Evans. Below is my interview with Clive Meaker where we talked about Sian Evans, Skyfall and Rudimental!

• Your new single “Right Back” is released July 2014, what can you tell us about that? 

The single was inspired by a going "back to basics" mentality.  We just wanted to make an underground soulful roller and had no expectations on how far it could, should or would go. We made the track with V Recordings in mind and they took an interest in it early on.  My manager, who is a music man (as well as a business head) found the sample and said "go make a tune with that". I asked Sian Evans to write the vocal and it was all pretty simple to put together.  A very liberating track to make as their was no pressure from anyone to make it, so it's got a natural vibe within it.

• Sian Evans from Kosheen features on this track, was it like working with her? 

Yeah it was really good. I sent Sian the instrumental track and she wrote the vocal at home and then we met and recorded at Retrosonic Studios in Bristol. Sian is a seasoned pro in the game. She knows how to write and sing a classic.

• Which vocalists would you like to collaborate with in the future? 

I have all the vocal collaborators lined up for the next album and have 5 of Bristol's best vocalists in our camp. I'm really excited about everything we are working on together. Outside of that I'd like to work with anyone who brings a special kind of soul. I'm not driven by working with big names or whoever happens to be in fashion. It's all about the soul.

• You’ve received critical acclaim from mainstream acts like Annie Mac and Rudimental, how did that feel?

It's great to have Annie Mac consistently selecting our tunes for her BBC RADIO 1 show as she represents the peak of UK dance music and that spreads out across the world. It was the trumpet player from Rudimental - Mark Crown - that picked up on our recent tune after hearing it on 1xtra. He liked the horn sounds we have on Right Back and sent a few messages of support, which was cool of him.  We 're gonna hook up soon for a beer.

•    Which artists and producers would you say have inspired and influenced your sound the most?
The Prodigy & Massive Attack are the main two. So many others to mention from The Beatles to Barber. I'm drawing mainly on the past for inspiration or really random and uncommercial current music.  I'm not really feeling alot of chart music at the moment although there are a few acts that feel true to their cause and I respect them for doing their thing.


• Last year you did a cover of Adele’s “Skyfall” for BBC Radio Live Lounge, what other songs would you like to cover in the future? 

I don't have any current plans to cover anything else but who knows.  I prefer to sample rather than cover and use the samples to make original, new compositions. Skyfall only came about as we had to cover a song for our BBC Maidavale Live Lounge Session for Trevor Nelson and we thought it was the only true quality song in the charts at that time. So we did Skyfall Bristol style. It turned out wicked.   

•    What upcoming projects can we expect from Dr Meaker? 
A 2015 album is the main focus and maybe a couple remixes. We will be signing an album deal which is exciting as we want to finish the album and then take the live show across Europe and the World.

INTERVIEW with Portia Ferrari

You might recognise the name Portia Ferrari from last week's fantastic Single of the Week but you might not have known that she's also a model and has modelled for the likes of M.I.A and ES Magazine. Ferrari is certainly on her way to break into the music scene so I took some time to interview her about her current work and future projects. Check out the interview below!

So you’re featured on Super Electric Party Machine’s track “Body Talk”. What was it like working with Larry Tee and AttackAttackAttack? 

So much fun! These guys make life so much more colourful in this city how could I resist?!

Do you have any more musical plans for the future? And if you could work with any artist who would you choose? 

Definitely! Lots to look forward to, some cool collaborations coming up very soon! If I could work with any artist it would be Tupac and even though that's not possible in this life I reckon he'd give me a chance :)

As well as being a singer you’re also a model. How important do you think it is to have a diverse range of talents?

I think it's fun being able to turn your hand to a variety of things, especially if you enjoy being constantly challenged but I don't think it is important to everyone, some choose to only concentrate on one thing, everyone's different. I think you should just do what feels right to you.

 

Recently you appeared on M.I.A’s Versus Versace collection. How did you react when you found out you had been chosen and what was it like working with M.I.A? 

 I was a bit shocked but excited more than anything! When the day finally arrived, it all went so fast, was over again before I knew it but I really enjoyed myself, definitely a memory I never thought I'd have!

How would you describe your typical fashion sense? 

I'd say I'm a bit of a tomboy really, I'd choose trousers over a dress any time. I'd like to think whatever I'm wearing, could also be the same outfit id choose to wear during an apocalypse  -Lara Croft eat your heart out!

If you could start up your own fashion label what would it be called and what would your designs be like? 

Well it's definitely an idea that I've always played with since I was a kid but to think of what the name might probably be is too much haha! Also I'd have two :) One would be more commercial and aimed at younger kids, the other would be premium designs I'm still dreaming about :)

Are there any other fashion labels you’d like to work with? 
This is such a good question but to be honest I'm pretty open minded so I'd enjoy whatever came my way, I usually do. Plus whatever has landed on your lap is there for a reason so I'd take it as my choice!

Is there anything you’d like to say to your fans and supporters? 

I'll remind people to BELIEVE in yourself and that all things that are possible. Also to be happy and in love! Life is too short

INTERVIEW with Kids N Cats

This week the fantastic Single of the Week is that of Kids N Cats, an Austrian trio consisting of Jeanne Nickels, Marten Kaffke and Peter Paul Aufreiter. Their debut single "Tip Tip" is really awesome so I took the time to interview them about the song, music video, upcoming projects and facial hair. Check out the interview below!

• For those of us who don't know much about Kids N Cats, describe yourself in 5 words.

• How did you guys meet and how did you come up with your band name? 
  Wuff!
  
  
• You recently released your first single "Tip Tip" which is currently Single of the Week on the blog. What can you tell us about that? 
  It's a song that you wake up to. Go out and create!
  
  
• The music video for the track has some awesome visuals. What inspired those visuals?

• What was your favourite part of the video to shoot? 
  JEANNE: The best part was to create this crazy Cindy Sherman-like landscape with really ugly stuff!
  PETER PAUL: To sit down on strawberries, which was actually harder than you can imagine.

INTERVIEW with Anne Horel

This week the fantastic Anne Horel is Single of the Week. Anne Horel is an artist, musician, actress and cat caretaker so to find out more about her many talents I decided to interview her! So prepare to find out all about the Paris-based superwoman!

Q: For those of us who don’t know much about Anne Horel, describe yourself in 5 words. 

A: Internet- addict

Q: You’re a woman of many talents, as we will discover throughout this interview. What is a typical day like for you and where do you find the time to do everything you do? 

A: I work from home. So my typical day is to wake up, check emails & social medias, hang out with my cat, dig the Internet, GIF, eat cheese and GIF again. Also, the secret is probably that I don’t sleep very much and that I consider myself lucky to do what I love to do. That’s a choice, not an easy one to make, but it gives me freedom. And that is something I couldn’t give up on.

Q: Your musical style is quite electronic and modern. Which artists would you say have inspired that sound? 

A: I’ve always been really eclectic in my tastes in general.  There is so much good stuff everywhere and I’m always curious to discover it. I’ve always been addicted to music. 

I was born in the 80s and grew up in the 90s. I grew up surrounded with many different kinds of music. It's complicated for me to say who influenced me the most, because it’s the plurality that inspires me.

But if I’d have to classify my music, I would say it’s a mix between synth pop, dance music and rap.

Q: Your song, “I’m A Floating Being” is currently Single of the Week. What was your inspiration behind that track?

A: It is the beginning of everything. The genesis. And it was so unexpected.

I studied Art for 5 years in Paris. The 3rd year, I was dragged by a friend in a sound workshop. 

At this time, it was the beginning of my work on social medias, and I was collecting group names on Facebook. 

So I thought of making a song with those groups names. I’ve actually made 3 others after this one, all called « I’m a floating being », gathered in an EP called « Anne Horel sings Facebook », 2 electro-inspired in collaboration with my friend Vincent Hénon, 2 piano-inspired in collaboration with my uncle. 

I’ve worked with Vincent ever since.

The most important thing is that when I’ve started making songs, I realised it was the best medium I could use to do everything I love gathered at the same place: writing, music, video, graphics, fashion, performance, development of a virtual body double character of myself.

Life is amazing. Things always happen for a reason.

Q: Your songs are bilingual in French and English. How long have you studied English for and if you could would you study another language?  

A: My first English class was with my elder sister. She was a huge Beatles fan and taught me English with the Beatles lyrics when I was 7. Even since, I’ve always loved speaking and learning English. I’ve studied it also at the university, and never stopped learning vocabulary, trying to practice as much as I can.

I think the best way to learn a language is to live in the country for a while. To not only learn language, but also being surrounded by the culture. So, I would love to spend some time in Japan to learn Japanese, and go back to Turkey. I’ve spent a lots of time in Istanbul when I was younger, and I love this city.

Q: Which musical artists would you like to collaborate with if you had the chance? 

A: My craziest dream would be to work with Miley Cyrus. To make her music videos and work on the visual animations she displays on stage. 

But basically, the list of people I would love to work with is long because every time I really love somebody’s work, I instantly want to work with them. Among them: Die Antwood, Of Montreal, Kap Bambino, Diplo, Yuksek, Django Django, Toxic Avenger, La Femme, Jackson and his Computerband, …pff and so many others…

I’d love to make music videos, GIFs and graphics for them. That would make me really happy.

Q: On top of your music you also produce some amazing graphic design work, such as GIFs for vine users and your own music videos. Where do you gather your inspiration for these amazing art pieces?

A: My inspiration takes its source in the Internet iconography. Tumblr is my home, I spend a lots of time collecting images, scrolling down on blogs, YouTube and Vine profiles. My brains & my hands do the rest. 

Q: Your GIFs are clearly full of expression and personality. Are there any other cool ways in which you express yourself?

A: :))) Haha! Well I do a lot of things. And it’s all part of my process and it evolves constantly with different tools. 

I have my own Radio show on a web radio based in Paris. In this show I invite people to talk about digital & web culture. The idea is to promote my guests by promoting things they like. Because this is one of the things I really love about the Internet: how people share what they like and how it spreads. 

I also work for a TV show on Canal + « L’Œil de Links ». It is about creativity on the Internet. I love this job because it allows me to talk about talented people and share the enthusiasm I feel for them and their work.

But otherwise, I also love cooking, Yoga, Gym tonic & Tarots reading.

Q: Do you get a lot of requests for GIFs and art?

A: More and more. And it warms my heart a lot. I would like to make GIF all the time. This is my favorite thing. Ever.

Q: On top of your musical and graphic design work you also act in a quirky online series called “Greetings From Michigannehorel”. What can you tell us about that? 

A: It’s a musical web series in 6 episodes & 6 music videos that was crowd-funded last summer and which is online on YouTube now. Each episode borrows a different genre (road movie, thriller, horror movie, science fiction, sitcom and documentary). There is also a prologue episode which is a GIF fotonovela. It tells the story of my character who meets an american producer (played by Brian J. Bowe) that wants to land her career in Michigan. But of course nothing happens the way it was supposed to and the whole story is absolutely absurd. Each episode is  followed with a music video. 

Q: To add to your list of talents you’ve also appeared on a Radio Marais interviewing two of my favourite vine users, Nick Gallo and Simply Sylvio. What was that like?

A: It was great! I was really happy and honoured they accepted my invitation! I like them a lot and would love to make other projects with them. 

Q: What has been your favourite trend on vine? (e.g. smack cam, let me take a selfie etc.) 

A: If James White is to be considered as a trend (as I do believe), I would say James White, though :)

Q: Social media is highly important to you for your graphic design work and music promotion. If you could design your own social media site/app what would it be like?

A: That’s a really good question! Some people ask me what app I use to make my GIFs. So I would probably design an application to make weird GIFs with weird stamps. Like camemberts and axolotls. It might happen at some point anyway, that is something I’d like to do.

Q: If you could pick only one of your many talents to pursue, which one would you pick? 

A: Being myself, I guess. That might sound stupid but it’s a very challenging thing when you’re an artist. Not being corrupted by anything that would not be in harmony with yourself.

Q: Lastly is there anything you would like to say to your fans? 

A: That they mean everything to me. Every single comment, every single like, every single share is an amazing  way to support me. There are no words to express how grateful I am.

INTERVIEW with Von Valley

Von Valley are a brand new Swedish pop group, whose debut single "Shadows" is out now. The band consists of Max Sjödin (vocals, bass), Viktor Broberg (guitar, synth), Albin Sjödin (percussion) and Simon Seidal (guitar, synth). Earlier this week I sent them some questions about their new single "Shadows", opinions on twerking and their EP due for release later this year, check out the interview below!

• Your debut single “Shadows” is out now. What can you tell us about it?
  We recorded 'Shadows' in the studio of Mats Björke (Mando Diao), who also produced the song. Max wrote the song in his and Albin's summer home located in the northern parts of Sweden. Shadows is a dark song about nights when you start thinking about things you regret. It was released on March 15 by Pass This On.
  

• The music video for “Shadows” has some lovely visuals. What inspired those visuals?
  
  We tried to capture the mood of the song throughout the video, with a glimpse of hope at the end. The landscapes and surroundings of our hometown Halmstad were a big inspiration, and are also where the video was recorded.
  
  
• From the “Shadows” music video, it’s evident you guys have quite a cool sense of style. Where do you like to shop for clothes and stuff?
  Thank you. That would be Max (the guy in the video).
  Sweden has a good fashion industry with cool brands which we all like. We usually shop from local stores, and everything from second hand to designer clothes.
  
  
• Your musical style is quite relaxed and folky. What artists would you say have influenced your music style?
  All four of us have been listening to many types of music while growing up, but some bands whom have definitely been an influence to us are The National, Loney Dear (from Sweden), Justin Vernon, Sigur Ros, Coldplay and Frida Sundemo (also from Sweden).
  
  
• So you guys are working on an EP due to be released later this year. What can you tell us about that?
  Yes, we have been recording a few songs for the EP, which will be out some time this summer. It will contain songs which can be recognized from some of our live session videos, and a few new songs as well. We're very excited to get it out there, and we'll be keeping everyone updated through Instagram and Facebook during the coming month.
  
  
• Will you be touring soon? If so, where?   
   
  We will be playing a few shows in Sweden during the next couple of months, and we've been planning to do a tour to follow the release of our upcoming EP. We don't have any details for you at this stage, but it will most likely be in and around Europe.
  
  
• As we all know Sweden has some pretty great musicians under it’s belt such as ABBA, Robyn and Miss Li who are all Magia Media favourites. Which Swedish artists would you like to be as successful as?
  We haven't really thought about that. We do look up to all the artists mentioned above, and hope to just like them be able to reach out to as many people as we can with our music.
  
  
• Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
  That's a hard one. If we could pick anyone, we'd be honored to get the opportunity to work with Paul Simon. Or Norah Jones.
  
  
• Have you or would you ever record any songs in Swedish? 
  We haven't. Perhaps some time in the future, but right now we feel it easier to write in English. It goes along more nicely with our music, and almost anyone can understand the words which means a lot to us.
  
  
•  Who out of the 4 of you would you say is the most in charge?
  
  Each one of us has naturally ended up taking care of different things in the band.
  
  
  Max is often the one who writes the lyrics and the foundation for a song, and then we all contribute with our own ideas to complete the song together. We do most of the non-music stuff surrounding the band by ourselves, like media/administrative work, so we all have to be pretty much in charge to make it work.
  

• Do any of you have any weird or terrible fears? E.g. spiders, clowns 
  Max is creeped out by touching live fish, and swimming in deep dark water. And when we're watching horror movies together, Simon is usually hiding behind a pillow.
  
  
• What is your opinion on twerking and scantily clad women in music videos?
  It's a strange phenomenon that we can't really relate to. It's quite inappropriate, really
